It was about '60 (a sort of mass) re-immigration of african americans to africa. a recent book by Randall Robinson, The Departure of a Black Man from his Native Land, should be compared with this book. Though I have yet to read the second book, two Radio shows / interviews with the author on the second book #1 (on Your Call with Laura Flanders) & #2 (on On Point) give a sort of picture; different conclusions (different times too)
